If anyone could claim to have written the definitive music of America, Aaron Copland would have the title. There is hardly a person alive who isn't already familiar with his "Fanfare for the Common Man" or "Hoedown" from his ballet 'Rodeo.' Copland's GREATEST HITS, as collected by RCA Victor, gives a savory taste of his very American work.
While the bulk of his popular work is usually heavy on pomp and percussion, 'Appalachian Spring,' uses strings and horns to create a vibrant pioneering scene. Originally written for a Martha Graham ballet, it highlights Copland's versatility. It contrasts dramatically against the other major ballet suite on the album, 'Billy the Kid.' While both stories concern themselves with people, the true protagonists are the great American landscapes upon which the stories unfold.
